What does a Structural Steel Checker do?

The ideal candidate for the Full Time Structural Steel Checker position at Kinsley Steel should have a strong background in checking and structural detailing. We prefer candidates with previous checking experience, but we are also open to individuals with over 5 years of structural detailing experience. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of our designs and drawings, starting with checking ABMs for accuracy before purchasing. You will also utilize Tekla Structures to check 3D models and review 2D drawings, confirming that all necessary dimensions for fabrication are present.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to read specifications, design drawings, and connection design packages, verifying that they have been followed appropriately. Your ability to coordinate the steel package with other trade contractors through the BIM process will be essential in this role. You will also play a crucial role in identifying and communicating errors to the Structural Steel Detailers using drawing markups or notes in the model. A strong knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in steel fabrication and erection is required for success in this role. The ability to understand and apply mathematics and geometry as applicable to the position is also necessary.

To excel in the role of Full Time Structural Steel Checker at Kinsley Steel, certain skills and proficiencies are essential. Experience with Tekla Structures is highly preferred, as this software is widely used in the industry for structural modeling. Familiarity with SDS/2, another popular software for steel detailing, will also be considered.

Knowledge of Bluebeam Revu, a PDF editing and collaboration software commonly used in construction, is also important for reviewing and marking up drawings. While not required, experience with Tekla EPM/Powerfab is a plus.

The successful candidate will be able to utilize these software and tools efficiently and effectively to carry out their duties.
